BIOGRAPHY JUDITH HAUSTEIN

Judith Haustein is a Songwriter and composer, multi-instrumentalist and music producer from South Germany whose music has been described as a vivid mixture of Alternative, Jazz and Electronica. ‘She can create oceanic landscapes’ (Manchester Music Live Review) while she sings “directly to you and the incredible production creates a soundscape to envelope you in her sound” (Songwriting Spotlight).

In her early twenties her ever-growing interest in Jazz harmony and improvisation lead Judith to study Music in England. As part of her BA Jazz studies in London under Stuart Hall, Eddie Parker and Nikki Iles she started to engage intensively with modal harmony and Brazilian music.

She then went on to study an MA in Audio Technology and began experimenting with sampling and soundscapes, introducing elements of Electronica to her songs. As part of her MA thesis Judith self-produced her debut album, which combined Brazilian styles with contemporary production techniques, under Prof. Simon Zagorski-Thomas.

Promoting the album, Judith was touring London’s Underground scene and England as a Jazz songwriter and with her virtuous six piece band (affectionately referred to as ‘the Peanutbutterflies’), playing some fine venues such as ‘Birmingham Jazz Festival’, or the ‘China white’ where she was supporting the legendary ‘Mark de Clive-Lowe’.

Her debut ‘Fire& Sleep’ was released in 2010 and features an exciting line-up of London musicians: Rob Pennel - Drums/ Percussion, Ben Bastin - Double/E Bass, Pedro Velasco - Guitars, Gaz Wilkins - Rhodes/ Moog, Chris Williams (Led Bib) - Alto Sax/ Flute, Liz Palmer - Flute.

Since 2010 Judith is based in Stuttgart free-lancing as a composer for film and media, but has also been working as an arranger, choir conductor and vocal coach. Through her current work as a producer and arranger she has become increasingly familiar with vocal and orchestral arrangements and is now also incorporating such elements into her style.

From 2016 to 2019 Judith has been eagerly working on some new original compositions that are the result of a long process of self-reflection and searching for a new authenticity within her music.

Meanwhile, these songs have metamorphosed into her new album ‘The Flood’, an international production, featuring London musicians Adam Osmianski (drums, percussion), Ferg Ireland (bass) and Jack Ellister (guitar), and producers Stephan Bissart (Berlin) and Gabriel Ralls (mastermind behind London Electro Rock Trio Plastique and Koto Kill). Judith’s second studio album was co-produced and co-mixed by Wolfgang Simm (Listen! Komposition & Ton, Stuttgart), mastered by Tom Krüger and was released via the London label Oti-O Records on February 4th 2022.

In 2019 Judith formed a new six-piece band that exclusively premiered the album live in Stuttgart, with various guest musicians.

After becoming a mom in 2019 she is now performing again regularly in and around Stuttgart promoting ‘The Flood’ with her band (Tobias Kopietz (keyb), Pavel Kotelkov (b), Aron Varda (dr), Daniel Pimenta (dr), Christian Pfeiffer (clo))  and is also as part of other formations (SISU, La Palma Lounge).

Recent Live Performances include ‘Club 72 at Merlin Kulturzentrum’, ‘Kultur Kiosk’, ‘die Luke‘, Stuttgart Town Hall (as part of an event for international women’s day), as well as shows in Zürich and Spain.

Over the past few years she has also been collaborating with various artists from the UK such as Jack Ellister (London, Stuttgart) and Koto Kill (London) as a live and session musician.

Judith’s influences range from Björk, Massive Attack and James Blake over PJ Harvey, Radiohead and Feist, to Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. Moreover various Jazz giants like Billie Holiday or Chet Baker as well as international composers such as Avishai Cohen, Violeta Parra or Antonio Carlos Jobim have greatly influenced her.
